Are dogs allowed to eat peppers?

Dürfen Hunde Paprika essen

Also known as Bell Pepper, Paprika contains many vitamins and is a very healthy human food. However, this does not automatically mean that it is the same for your four-legged companion. Find out below whether dogs can eat peppers or whether eating them may pose risks.

Peppers for dogs: healthy or poisonous?

Paprika is rich in fibre and characterised by its high content of vitamins A, B and C, among other things. It also contains minerals, such as calcium, zinc and magnesium, and secondary plant compounds with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects.

At first glance, peppers seem healthy for a dog, and many an owner might think that he is doing something good for his four-legged friend with the vegetable.

However, the reality is somewhat different. On closer inspection, peppers are not recommended as a snack for dogs. The vegetable, which belongs to the so-called nightshade family, contains solanine. If dogs eat a small piece of paprika, this is usually not too much of a problem.

However, if dogs eat a significant amount of peppers, the solanine can cause diarrhoea, vomiting and other serious poisoning symptoms such as cramps and dizziness. In this case, you should immediately consult a vet with your four-legged friend.

Are dogs allowed to eat cooked peppers?

If you want your dog to eat peppers, you should cook the vegetables beforehand. This reduces the solanine content and makes the peppers more digestible for your dog.

However, we recommend that you keep the amount eaten small and do not give your dog too many peppers at once. The green stalk of the vegetable, on the other hand, should never end up in their food bowl as it has an exceptionally high solanine content.

Are dogs allowed to eat red peppers?

Depending on the degree of ripeness, peppers are either green, yellow, orange or red. Ripe, red peppers usually contain slightly less solanine. The red variety is the most suitable if you want to let your dog eat raw peppers despite the possible risks.

What dogs can eat instead of peppers

Of course, there is nothing wrong with feeding your dog some fruit or vegetables in between meals. As long as you choose the suitable varieties, your four-legged friend can benefit from the vitamins and minerals they contain, just like you.

For example, give your dog a piece of carrot, cucumber, pear or apple. These vegetables and fruits are usually well-tolerated, and many four-legged friends are happy to eat them. At the same time, unlike peppers, you do not have to worry that eating them will harm your dog's health.
