Are dogs allowed to eat maize?

Whether in the form of whole corn cobs, as a vegetable garnish or as popcorn when going to the cinema - corn is a popular food and, measured by the amount cultivated, even the most widely produced cereal worldwide.

But are dogs actually allowed to eat maize or should they be fed with a different grain? The answer to this question is given below.

Is maize healthy for dogs?

Corn contains numerous valuable nutrients. These include vitamins A and E as well as B vitamins, magnesium, calcium and iron. In addition, maize is rich in dietary fibre, which is important for a functioning digestive system.

Unlike wheat, which is known to cause digestive problems in dogs often, maize does not contain gluten. This makes this grain much more digestible for four-legged friends, so that in principle, there is nothing to be said against letting dogs eat maize.

What kind of maize can dogs eat?

If you want to let your dog eat maize, you should refrain from feeding them whole, raw grains. They cannot digest these, so they are simply excreted whole.

You should also refrain from feeding your dog corn on the cob directly from the field when you go for a walk. These are usually treated with pesticides that pose a serious risk to your dog's health.

Instead, reach for corn in water or pureed canned corn if you want to feed your dog corn.

Corn for overweight dogs

Just like other grains, corn contains a lot of carbohydrates. For this reason, you should generally not overdo it in terms of quantity.

If you want your dog to lose weight, it is even a good idea to avoid maize completely and to use grain-free dog food as an alternative.

This also applies to dogs with diabetes, for whom the amount of food and the insulin dose must be coordinated and for whom too high a carbohydrate intake from foods such as corn can cause problems.

Corn in Bellfor dog food

Although a dog’s digestion is primarily specialised to utilise animal fats and proteins, the four-legged friend still needs a certain amount of carbohydrates. In addition to potatoes, gluten-free grains such as rice and maize are also suitable. Wheat, on the other hand, should be avoided in the diet of dogs.

In addition to grain-free dry dog food, you will also find grain-free varieties without gluten in our range. The gluten-free dry food from our Premium Pur range contains a high proportion of meat as well as corn and rice as a digestible source of carbohydrates.

Maize for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, dogs can eat corn and usually tolerate it very well, as long as you don't overdo it on the quantity and refrain from feeding raw, whole corn kernels.

As maize is gluten-free, we use it as a source of carbohydrates in some varieties of our dry food, which provides your dog with important energy for everyday life and, unlike wheat, is much more digestible.
