Whether as jam, on cakes or simply as a sweet snack in between meals - cherries are popular on the list of favourite fruits for many people and many a dog can't resist these small round fruits either.
But are dogs allowed to eat cherries at all or could the fruit possibly harm your four-legged friend? We will give you the answer to this question in the following.
It is no secret that fruit contains numerous vitamins and other valuable nutrients and should ideally be on the menu every day as part of a balanced diet.
Cherries are no exception in this respect. Among other things, they contain vitamin A as well as various B vitamins, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. They are also rich in antioxidants.
However, the fact that the fruit is healthy for humans does not necessarily mean that dogs should also eat cherries. After all, some foods that are completely harmless or beneficial for us are actually poisonous for our four-legged friends.
Thankfully, this is not so with cherries. Dogs are therefore allowed to eat cherries. However, there is one crucial point that you should bear in mind for the benefit of your four-legged friend.
Dog owners who have a cherry tree in their garden often observe how their four-legged friends eat the fallen fruit with great appetite.
This may seem harmless at first, but it can become a problem. This is because cherry pits contain toxic prussic acid. Although in many cases the pits are excreted unharmed or some dogs even spit them out on their own, eating cherries with pits is not recommended.
It can happen that dogs bite the pits or that they open by themselves and the prussic acid contained in them is released. Depending on the size of your pooch and the amount they ingest, your dog may then experience symptoms of poisoning such as severe salivation, vomiting and diarrhoea. In this case, you must immediately contact a veterinarian for your four-legged friend.
To be on the safe side, dogs should therefore only eat cherries without pits. So, if you own a cherry tree, you should make sure that your four-legged friend does not help themself.
Similar to humans, it is theoretically possible for dogs to be allergic to cherries due to a cross-allergy. In practice, however, this is very rare. Nevertheless, if you suspect your dog is allergic to cherries, you should not let your dog eat them in this case.
As you can see, there is nothing at all wrong with letting your dog eat a few cherries from time to time. Many four-legged friends enjoy these little fruits very much and allergic reactions only occur in rare, isolated cases.
However, because of the prussic acid contained in the pits, dogs should always eat only pitless cherries. Regardless of this, all fruit is, of course, only ever a snack for in-between meals.
