Are dogs allowed to drink milk?

Dürfen Hunde Milch trinken?

Milk is generally considered very healthy and is important in the human diet, especially as a supplier of calcium. But what about dogs? Are dogs allowed to drink milk or can the supposedly healthy drink possibly harm your four-legged friend? We will give you the answer to this question in the following.

Why most dogs cannot tolerate milk

After birth, puppies are initially fed exclusively with their mother's milk. This nutritious drink provides the little four-legged friends with all the nutrients they need in the first few weeks of life.

In order for the young dogs to be able to digest the milk and the lactose it contains, they produce the enzyme lactase, which breaks milk down into glucose and galactose in the intestine.

At the age of about eight to ten weeks, the puppies are finally completely weaned from their mother's milk. From this point on, they are only fed a special puppy food. Since lactase is now no longer needed, it gradually disappears from the animal's intestine, eventually resulting in lactose intolerance.

For this reason, most dogs cannot tolerate milk and should therefore not be given it to drink. Typical complaints the consumption of lactose triggers in dogs are diarrhoea, flatulence and vomiting.

Can dogs drink lactose-free milk?

As many people are known to suffer from lactose intolerance, lactose-free milk is now available in practically every supermarket.

Lactose-free milk is theoretically an alternative for dogs, which they usually tolerate better. However, this milk should not end up in your dog's bowl in large quantities.

Dogs can be allergic to milk

Some dogs are not only lactose intolerant, but also allergic to certain proteins in milk. In this case, your dog should, of course, drink neither normal milk nor consume lactose-free dairy products, as unpleasant allergic reactions may occur after consuming both types.

Bellfor puppy milk for growing dogs

If a bitch does not produce enough milk after giving birth or if puppies have to grow up without a mother, the young dogs must not drink normal milk either. This is because cow's milk differs significantly from a bitch's breast milk in terms of the nutrients it contains.

In order to supply the growing four-legged friends with the nutrients they need, it is therefore necessary to use a high-quality puppy milk. In this case, we recommend Bellfor puppy milk.

Thanks to its grain-free formula made from carefully selected ingredients such as whole goat's milk powder and insect protein, it is particularly easy to digest, so that nothing stands in the way of your puppy's healthy growth.

Milk for dogs - our conclusion

You often read that it is okay for dogs to drink milk. This is not wrong in principle. After all, unlike some other foods, such as chocolate, milk is not toxic to your four-legged friend.

Nevertheless, dogs should not generally drink milk. If they do, it should be only in very small amounts, as it is not well tolerated by most four-legged friends due to the lactose it contains.

Lactose-free milk would theoretically be a good alternative for dogs. However, there is no reason why a dog needs to drink milk anyway. In any case, you don't need it to feed your four-legged friend in a species-appropriate way.

A high-quality dog food, such as you will find in our range, provides your four-legged friend with all the important nutrients without you having to worry about unsuitable ingredients. And of course, this also includes an adequate amount of calcium.
