Are dogs allowed to eat eggs?

Dürfen Hunde Eier essen?

As you probably know, your dog's nutritional needs are vastly different from your own. It is therefore very important that nothing ends up in your four-legged friend's food bowl that he cannot tolerate.

Many owners wonder, for example, whether dogs can eat eggs or whether they are possibly harmful. The answer to this question is given below.

Eggs are very nutritious

Eggs contain many valuable nutrients. In addition to high-quality proteins, these include unsaturated fats and various important vitamins. Although eggs have had a very bad reputation for a long time, the truth is that they are actually quite healthy and are fine to land on your plate regularly, at least for yourself.

Of course, this does not inherently mean that dogs should be allowed to eat eggs. After all, some foods that are harmless to humans can be poisonous to dogs or at least cause them unpleasant digestive problems.

However, this does not apply to eggs. If you follow a few rules, your dog can eat eggs without you having to worry about their well-being.

Can dogs eat boiled eggs?

In principle, you can let your dog eat boiled eggs from time to time. However, you should not overdo it in terms of quantity.

Depending on the size of your dog, one or two eggs a week is fine. Also, make sure that the eggs are fully cooked and unseasoned for your dog.

Can dogs eat raw eggs?

Although are basically not harmful to dogs and are well tolerated by most four-legged friends, feeding raw eggs should be avoided if possible.

One reason for this is that eggs can sometimes be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella infection is quite rare in dogs. It is, however, quite possible and is particularly noticeable through diarrhoea and vomiting as well as fever and general malaise.

However, the real risk associated with eating raw eggs for dogs is the avidin contained in the raw egg white. The glycoprotein inhibits the absorption of vitamin B7 (biotin) and can therefore cause a biotin deficiency.

If you still want your dog to eat raw eggs, use only fresh eggs and give them only the yolk.

Can dogs eat scrambled eggs?

What applies to normal boiled eggs also applies to scrambled eggs. Your dog may therefore eat scrambled eggs from time to time, provided they have not been seasoned and have cooled down before eating.

It is also best to prepare scrambled eggs for your dog in a coated pan without additional fat such as butter or oil to ensure that they are as digestible as possible.

Dogs and eggs - our conclusion

As you can see, dogs are generally allowed to eat eggs. However, you should not feed your four-legged friend eggs too often and generally avoid raw eggs or raw egg whites.

Regardless of this, your dog's diet should mainly consist of a high-quality dog food, which, like some varieties of Bellfor, may, of course, also contain some egg.

In our range, you will find a large selection of different types of wet and dry dog food, which you can feed your dog in a species-appropriate way without any problems, as well as numerous healthy dog snacks that your four-legged friend is guaranteed to love.
