Are dogs allowed to eat kohlrabi?

Dürfen Hunde Kohlrabi essen?

Kohlrabi (in English, Turnip cabbage) is a versatile vegetable that regularly ends up on many people's plates, prepared in a variety of ways.

But what about dogs? Are dogs allowed to eat kohlrabi or can this healthy vegetable possibly harm the four-legged friends? We will give you the answer to this question in the following paragraphs.

Is kohlrabi healthy for dogs?

It is no secret that kohlrabi is easily digestible and healthy for us humans, and the vegetable is, therefore, welcome to be an integral part of our diet. Dogs, however, have different nutritional needs. Some foods that are harmless for humans are poorly tolerated or even poisonous for our four-legged friends.

However, this does not apply to kohlrabi. Your dog is therefore welcome to eat some kohlrabi from time to time without you having to worry about its welfare.

Kohlrabi contains many valuable nutrients

The kohlrabi, which belongs to the vegetable family cabbage, is extremely rich in nutrients. Among other things, it contains the minerals magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and potassium as well as vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and C.

At the same time, kohlrabi is very low in calories, with about 27 calories per 100 grams. Kohlrabi is therefore also very suitable as a snack for dogs that have problems with their weight.

However, regardless of any weight problems they may have, you should generally not overdo it in terms of quantity. As an occasional snack, kohlrabi is usually a good choice for dogs. However, it should not be a major part of their daily diet.

Not all dogs tolerate kohlrabi

Although kohlrabi is very healthy for dogs, not all four-legged friends tolerate the vegetable without problems. Some dogs get flatulence, when they eat kohlrabi. Some dogs also get diarrhoea and stomach aches.

If your dog has never eaten kohlrabi before, you should only give him a small amount at first. This way you can see whether your dog tolerates kohlrabi at all or whether you should give him another vegetable to eat in the future instead.

Are dogs allowed to eat raw kohlrabi?

In principle, dogs can also eat raw kohlrabi. However, when cooked, it is easier to digest and more digestible for the four-legged friend. We, therefore, recommend that you feed your dog cooked kohlrabi. However, a small piece of raw vegetable should not normally be a problem.

Besides the tuber, the leaves of the kohlrabi, which are particularly rich in nutrients, are also edible. However, they are comparatively difficult to digest and can occasionally cause stomach aches in dogs.

Kohlrabi for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, in principle, dogs can eat kohlrabi. It is best tolerated when cooked. Regardless of this, vegetables such as kohlrabi alone are not enough to provide a dog with all the necessary nutrients.

For this purpose, you will of course need good dog food, such as you will find in the Bellfor shop. In addition to high-quality wet and dry food our range also includes natural supplements and grooming products. You will also find a large selection of healthy dog treats, which your dog will probably like better than kohlrabi anyway.
