Are dogs allowed to eat asparagus?

Dürfen Hunde Spargel essen?

Whether green or white - asparagus is a popular delicacy that regularly ends up on many people's plates during the season.

But are dogs actually allowed to eat asparagus or can the low-calorie vegetable perhaps even harm the four-legged friends? We will give you the answer to this question in the following paragraphs.

Vegetables like asparagus as a healthy meal for dogs?

Vegetables are indispensable for a healthy diet. They contain many vital nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. At the same time, they are low in calories and provide us with important fibre for digestion.

However, the nutritional needs of dogs are quite different from our own in some respects. As semi-carnivores, they rely on their diet to provide a sufficient amount of animal proteins and fats. Vegetable components are also part of their diet. However, they should make up a smaller proportion than for us humans.

In addition, some foods that we can eat regularly without any problems are not tolerated by dogs or can even be toxic for them. However, this does not apply to asparagus. Therefore, as a rule, there is nothing wrong with letting your dog eat some asparagus from time to time.

Asparagus also provides dogs with valuable nutrients

Asparagus is a high-fibre vegetable that is very low in calories thanks to a water content of more than 90 percent. Asparagus also contains numerous vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and iron, as well as vitamin E and some B vitamins.

Dogs can also benefit from the nutrients of asparagus. However, you should not overdo it in terms of quantity. Depending on the size of your dog, a few small pieces or even a whole spear or two can be fine.

However, keep in mind that asparagus has a strong diuretic effect due to the amino acid asparagine it contains. This is a positive thing, as it can help to eliminate more harmful substances from the body. However, you must provide your dog with sufficient drinking water after eating asparagus so that he can make up for the loss of fluids. In addition, you must of course walk your four-legged friend promptly so that he can relieve himself.

Are dogs allowed to eat green asparagus?

Dogs may eat both green and white asparagus. The only difference between the two varieties is that the latter is harvested before it grows out of the ground. Green asparagus, on the other hand, grows above ground. This causes the substances needed for photosynthesis to form inside it, giving it its green colour.

Are dogs allowed to eat raw asparagus?

White asparagus should be peeled and cooked before it goes into the food bowl. Green asparagus, on the other hand, can be eaten both cooked and raw. However, for optimal digestibility, it is recommended to cook the green variety as well.

Not all dogs tolerate asparagus

Although asparagus is generally not harmful to dogs and most four-legged friends tolerate it well in moderation, it can occasionally lead to intolerances. If your dog gets flatulence or diarrhoea after eating asparagus, he should of course not eat it in future.

Asparagus for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, dogs are generally allowed to eat asparagus. If your four-legged friend likes the vegetable, he is welcome to have some in his bowl from time to time. This applies to both green and white asparagus. The latter should be peeled and cooked before being eaten by the dog.
