Labradoodle: Dog food and breed portrait

The Labradoodle is a dog that is the result of crossbreeding between the King Poodle and the Labrador. So far, these hybrid dogs are only recognised as an independent dog breed by the American CKC.

Regardless of this, the Labradoodle has long been known worldwide and is very popular with many dog lovers, not least because of its friendly nature.

History of the Labradoodle

The origins of the Labradoodle lie in Australia, where Wally Conron was trying to breed a guide dog for people with dog allergies from the late 1980s onwards. For this purpose, he relied not only on the Labrador but also on the King Poodle, because, unlike many other dog breeds, the King Poodle does not change its coat twice a year. The name Labradoodle is therefore a combination of Labrador and Poodle.

Today, in addition to crosses of poodles and Labradors, various other breeds are also crossed with this breed. These include the English and the American Cocker Spaniel as well as the Curly Coated Retriever. Independent of these efforts to develop an independent dog breed, Poodles and Labradors are still crossed with each other and offered for sale as Labradoodles.

Characteristics of Labradoodles

Characteristics of the Labradoodle

Labradoodles normally reach a height of between 54 and 65 centimetres and a weight of 25 to 35 kilograms. The dogs' physique is muscular without appearing stocky.

The life expectancy of the Labradoodle is 12 to 15 years. As with all dogs, poor living conditions can, of course, lead to earlier deaths.

The coat of the Labradoodle

The Labradoodle usually has a lush, curly coat, which he owes to the genes of the Poodle. Sometimes, however, the Labrador's genes prevail. In this case, the four-legged friend has an almost smooth coat. The coat can have different colours. In addition to black or brown animals, there are also cream-coloured, white and pied Labradoodles.

If you decide to get a Labradoodle, you should be aware that their coat care involves a certain amount of effort. The four-legged friends usually have to be brushed daily to prevent the hair from matting. It is also necessary to trim the coat regularly, for which a visit to the groomer is a good idea.

Labradoodle temperament and character

The character traits of the Labradoodle can vary. However, the Labradoodle is generally considered to be a friendly and good-tempered dog that also gets along well with children. The Labradoodle loves the company of his human companions and enjoys being allowed to accompany them. He is also usually friendly and open to strangers, which he often shows by greeting them effusively.

The Labradoodle's hunting instinct is normally only moderately pronounced. It is important to avoid excessive strictness when training the dog. Of course, this does not mean that the dog should not be trained with the necessary consistency.

Activities with the Labradoodle

Labradoodles are docile and active animals. It is therefore important to exercise them mentally as well as physically in everyday life. In addition to long walks, various disciplines from the world of dog sports can be used for this purpose. These include agility and dog dancing.

Apart from that, the Labradoodle is, of course, still suitable to be trained as a guide dog and to support people with impaired vision in their everyday life.

Labradoodle Diseases

The Labradoodle is a robust dog that is not too susceptible to diseases. However, there is a certain genetic disposition to progressive retinal atrophy, elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia.

It is therefore advisable to keep an eye on the health of the Labradoodle's eyes and joints and to consult a vet promptly if necessary. In addition, concerning joint health, it is important to avoid overloading the musculoskeletal system during growth.

Is the Labradoodle a hypoallergenic dog?

The Labradoodle is considered a so-called hypoallergenic dog. It is therefore said to be particularly suitable for people who suffer from dog allergies. In many cases, this is indeed true. However, there is no guarantee.

All dogs produce allergens, which can then be distributed in the environment via the saliva or urine of the animals. Only the amount of allergens can vary.

Anyone who decides to acquire a dog despite an existing allergy should therefore ideally spend time with the four-legged friend in advance to check whether the contact will lead to any problems. The Labradoodle is no exception in this respect. Although it can be a good dog for allergy sufferers, it is certainly not hypoallergenic.

The correct nutrition for the Labradoodle

Feeding according to needs is very important for the Labradoodle's well-being and health. When feeding, it is important to bear in mind that Labradoodles often have quite a big appetite and therefore like to eat too much if you let them. To avoid obesity, it is therefore important to pay attention to appropriate portion sizes and to also include dog treats in the daily calorie amount. The necessary amount of food can vary depending on the age, weight and activities of the four-legged friend.
