Alternative Remedies against Ticks and Fleas on Dogs

Alternative Remedies against Ticks and Fleas on Dogs

Ectoparasites such as ticks, fleas and mites are annoying and unpleasant for dogs. Sometimes an infestation can even pose a serious health risk, because some of the parasites, such as ticks, often carry pathogens which can harm dogs.

At the same time, it is known that many conventional remedies against ticks, fleas and other parasites contain chemical agents that sometimes can negatively impact the dog's organism. Many keepers are therefore interested in natural remedies against ticks and fleas. You can find out below which natural alternatives are available and whether their use is recommended.

Does Garlic Combat Ticks on Dogs?

Some dog owners swear on the effect of garlic to keep ticks or fleas away from their four-legged friends. However, the downside is that garlic contains substances that are toxic for dogs and, in addition to acute symptoms of poisoning, its consumption can also destroy the red blood cells (erythrocytes) and therefore cause anaemia.

In view of the fact that the effect of garlic against ticks and other parasites is disputed anyway, it is not a recommended alternative for parasite prophylaxis in dogs.

Does Baking Soda Help Against Fleas?

Baking soda is a tried and tested remedy against fleas. The baking powder is not used directly on the animal's fur, but rather spread on carpets and upholstered furniture, incorporated with a brush and then thoroughly vacuumed. It is indeed important, in the event of an acute flea infestation, not only to free the dog but also the surrounding area of fleas, as well as their larvae and eggs.

The effect of baking soda against fleas can be explained rather by the thorough cleaning with a brush and vacuum cleaner than by the baking powder itself. Nonetheless, this is at least an alternative that does not harm dogs, unlike feeding garlic.

Be Wary of Tick Protection with Essential Oils

Essential oils are often recommended as tick and mosquito repellents for both humans and dogs. However, they should only be used diluted. For example, a mixture of a few drops of the essential oil against ticks with almond oil or coconut oil as a base can be suitable.

Regardless of this, essential oils should not be used as a tick or mosquito repellent for dogs without the appropriate specialist knowledge, because they can lead to problems such as severe skin irritation in the four-legged friends. In addition, the hoped-for effect is usually short-lived and the intense smell of the essential oils does not always go down well with dogs.

It is therefore not advisable to simply try out different essential oils and to test their effects and tolerability without having studied the subject first.

Apple Vinegar against Ticks and Grass Mites in Dogs

Apple cider vinegar is another home remedy for ticks and grass mites in dogs. It can be diluted with water and applied on the animal's fur with a spray bottle. This can help at least with a light infestation or as a preventive measure.

However, it is more than questionable whether your dog will be happy about it. After all, apple cider vinegar doesn't smell particularly pleasant, and dogs' sense of smell is known to be significantly more sensitive than that of humans. Regularly using apple cider vinegar or other types of vinegar to combat mites and ticks in dogs is therefore not a very good idea in practice.

As you can see, skin parasite infestation is serious matter for your dog that should never be ignored. At the same time, however, many conventional agents against parasites also pose a health risk that should not be underestimated due to the chemical agents they contain.
