Coccidiosis in dogs: symptoms and natural treatment

Coccidiosis in dogs

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that can occur in dogs worldwide. It is caused by so-called coccidia and can take a relatively harmless or life-threatening course.

Below you will learn how your dog can become infected with coccidia and what symptoms the parasite infestation causes. We also explain how you can treat coccidiosis in your dog in a natural way.

What are coccidia?

Coccidia are single-cell parasites that infect the intestines of their host. They are found practically all over the world and can infect other mammals or humans in addition to dogs.

There are different types of microscopic unicellular organisms. When a dog suffers from coccidiosis, in most cases Cystoisospora canis, Cystoisospora burrowsi or Cystoisospora ohiosensis are responsible.

The infection is spread orally by the four-legged animal taking up spores of coccidia via the faeces of an infected conspecific or contact with contaminated surfaces.

If the coccidia enter the body in this way, they settle in the epithelial cells of the intestine. There they begin to multiply, so that after about a week or two, the dog also excretes spores, which in turn can infect other dogs with coccidiosis.

Especially in group-housed animals, the parasites spread very quickly, and even symptom-free dogs can act as vectors.

Recognizing coccidiosis in dogs

Infestation with coccidia does not always manifest itself through visible symptoms. In healthy adult dogs, it is quite possible that the coccidiosis progresses without visible symptoms.

Especially in puppies and weakened quadrupeds, however, parasite infestation regularly leads to serious problems. Affected dogs then suffer from diarrhoea, which can sometimes be watery and bloody.

They may also suffer from loss of appetite and weight loss. In addition, severe diarrhea is generally associated with the risk of dehydration. Coccidiosis also causes fever in dogs in some cases.

Diagnosis of coccidiosis in dogs

In order to detect an infestation of coccidia in your dog, the veterinarian must examine the four-legged friend's excrement. Since spores are not always excreted when the dog defecates, a negative sample does not necessarily mean that the four-legged friend is not suffering from coccidiosis.

By the way, Giardia cause quite similar complaints in dogs. For this reason, it is common practice for the veterinarian to test your dog directly for a possible infestation with these intestinal parasites.

Treat coccidiosis in dogs

For the treatment of coccidiosis in dogs, there are various drugs, some of which are also used in preparations against other intestinal parasites, such as threadworms.

However, conventional drugs against coccidia often place a burden on the already weakened organism of the four-legged friend that should not be underestimated. Taking them therefore not only kills existing parasites, but in many cases also has undesirable side effects for the dog itself.

For this reason, we recommend that you rely on natural alternatives when treating your dog suffering from coccidiosis.

Bellfor Vermal for dogs with coccidiosis

With Bellfor Vermal we have developed a special preparation against intestinal parasites in dogs. The easily digestible powder contains only natural ingredients that do not unnecessarily burden your dog's body.

At the same time, the carefully balanced composition of Bellfor Vermal enables effective treatment, so that you can reliably combat coccidia in your dog.

Following the treatment with our Vermal powder, we recommend that you strengthen your dog's immune system with Bellfor Immune to help him recover quickly from his parasite infestation.

Hygiene measures are important for dogs with coccidiosis

Since the spores of coccidia can easily spread everywhere and the small parasites are extremely resistant, it is important that you take comprehensive hygiene measures in your household.

Otherwise there is a risk that your dog will become infected with coccidiosis again and again and you will not be able to control the parasite infestation permanently.

We therefore recommend that you clean all surfaces with a steam cleaner and wash textiles such as blankets or pillows in the washing machine at 60 degrees. The more consistently you implement these hygiene measures, the faster your quadruped will have survived the infestation of coccidia again.

The coccidia of the dog and man

People can also be infected with certain coccidia. However, the species that are responsible for coccidiosis in your four-legged friend are specialized in dogs.

There is therefore no danger for yourself or other members of your family. However, if you have a second dog, it is advisable to treat it with Bellfor Vermal as well to prevent possible infection with the annoying intestinal parasites.
