Medium Schnauzer: Dog food and breed portrait

The Medium Schnauzer is a medium-sized dog. Originating from Germany, the breed is listed by the FCI under Group 2, Section 1.2 as Standard 182. The Medium Schnauzer is often called Standard Schnauzer or simply, the Schnauzer. Despite its occasionally stubborn nature, the intelligent pooch enjoys great popularity as a family dog.

History of the Medium Schnauzer

The FCI recognises three different types of Schnauzer, the Miniature Schnauzer, the Medium Schnauzer and the Giant Schnauzer, as three independent dog breeds.

The Medium Schnauzer is considered the oldest of these. Its origins lie in southern Germany, where it was used during the 19th century for hunting rats and mice and as a guard dog.

Unlike today, however, there was no differentiation between Pinschers and Schnauzers at that time. For this reason, the standard Schnauzer was initially called rough-haired Pinscher.

In 1895, the Pinscher-Schnauzer-Klub 1895 e.V., which is still active today, was founded. At the beginning of the 20th century, this club finally defined a separate breed standard for Schnauzers and thus ensured that they became an independent breed.

According to the puppy statistics of the VDH, 416 Mittelschnauzer puppies were born in 2020.

Characteristics of the Standard Schnauzer

The Standard Schnauzer is a medium-sized dog breed. According to the breed standard, its shoulder height is between 45 and 50 centimetres for both males and females, while its weight ranges between 14 and 20 kilos.

The Standard Schnauzer is strong and has a square build with a well-defined chest, a moderately tucked up belly and a slightly sloping back line. The legs of the Schnauzer are muscular. His hind legs stand obliquely and his forelegs vertically.

The Medium Schnauzer has an elongated, powerful head. Their dark eyes look forward and their folding ears are set high. And of course, the Schnauzer's facial hair, consisting of a moustache and luxuriant eyebrows, is particularly striking - Schnauzer means “moustache” in German.

If a Schnauzer comes from a reputable breeder and has no diseases, their life expectancy is between 13 and 16 years.

The coat of the Standard Schnauzer

According to the breed standard, the Schnauzer's rough coat may showcase the colours salt-and-pepper and black. They require thorough grooming, which includes regular brushing about three times a year as well as trimming.

In this way, you not only ensure a well-groomed appearance. You will also prevent the hair from matting and reduce the risk of your Standard Schnauzer becoming infested with skin parasites such as mites or fleas.

You can either trim your Schnauzer's coat yourself or contact a groomer who will do the trimming professionally for you.

Medium Schnauzer temperament and character

The Standard Schnauzer is an extremely intelligent dog, which sometimes proves to be a very stubborn roommate. If you want a four-legged friend who will always obey your commands without resistance, a Schnauzer is probably not the right breed for you.

However, if you can deal with the stubbornness and find the right amount of consistency in training, your Schnauzer will soon develop into a loyal friend for life. These courageous animals build up a close relationship with their owners. On the other hand, they are usually distant and not very interested in strangers.

Activities with the Schnauzer

Unlike the Giant Schnauzer, the Medium Schnauzer is not used as a service dog. Instead, it is a typical companion dog, which is also suitable for families with children.

For a relaxed life together, it is essential to challenge the Standard Schnauzer both physically and mentally, and to provide enough exercise with suitable activities.

In addition to long walks and playing together, jogging and cycling with your dog as well as various disciplines from dog sports can be a good choice.

For example, try the following sports with your Miniature Schnauzer:

Species-appropriate rewards for your Standard Schnauzer

As already mentioned, the Standard Schnauzer has a mind of its own and will therefore never be as obedient to you to the same extent as, for example, a Golden Retriever would.

It is therefore all the more important to use appropriate rewards for your Medium Schnauzer when training together. For this purpose, it is best to try dog treats from Bellfor.

Carefully selected ingredients make our dog snacks a tasty treat that your Schnauzer absolutely won't be able to resist. At the same time, with our treats, you can be sure that you are choosing healthy snacks for your dog.

Standard Schnauzer diseases

The Standard Schnauzer is considered hardy and not very susceptible to disease. However, due to his genetics, they are occasionally prone to eye diseases as well as heart problems and tumours in the mouth or on the toes. He is also at increased risk of hip dysplasia.

Especially concerning joint health, it is therefore very important to make sure when purchasing a Standard Schnauzer that your four-legged friend comes from a reputable breed and that their parents do not suffer from hip dysplasia.

The right diet for your Schnauzer

A balanced diet is crucial for the health and well-being of your Standard Schnauzer. We recommend that you feed our grain-free Münsterländer Landschmaus.

This easily digestible dry dog food is available in different varieties and provides your Schnauzer with all the important nutrients it needs.
