Sloughi: dog food and breed portrait

Sloughi: Hundefutter und Rasseportrait

The Sloughi is a large dog breed from Morocco. The short-haired sighthounds are led by the FCI in group 10, section 3. In their home country they are still frequently used for hunting.

In Europe, however, the Sloughi is above all a popular family dog, which is characterized by its friendly and reserved nature.

History of the Sloughi

The Sloughi belongs to the oriental greyhounds. The breed is very old and originally comes from North Africa. On Egyptian wall reliefs there are indications that dogs similar to the Sloughi were already kept about 3,500 years ago.

The nomadic tribes of the Bedouins and Berbers have always used the Sloughi as a hunting dog. For this reason it is also called Berber sighthound. The noble animals were considered very precious in former times and were accordingly cared for and spoiled by their owners.

In Europe the Sloughi only became known through travellers at the beginning of the 19th century. Meanwhile he enjoys increasing popularity also with us, whereby he is appreciated primarily as a family dog.

Features of the Sloughi

The life expectancy of the Sloughi is with 12 to 16 years quite high for a dog of his size. After all, male specimens reach a shoulder height of 66 to 72 centimetres. Females become somewhat smaller with 61 to 68 centimetres.

The long-legged Sloughi has a light build and normally reaches a weight of 25 to 28 kilograms. Despite his elegant and slender body, the Sloughi has a well developed musculature as well as a clearly arched chest, which gives a good impression of the animals' performance.

The short coat of the Sloughi is fine and dense. It can show different shades of sand, ranging from light to reddish tones. In addition, the breed standard of the Sloughi allows animals with a black mask and coat and black current or cloud.

The noble-looking, fine head of the Sloughi has a hardly pronounced stop, a straight nose bridge as well as a strong jaw.

His large eyes are characterized by a characteristic gentle gaze. They are usually dark. With light Sloughis, however, amber eyes are also permitted. The high set ears of the Sloughi either hang down or are slightly turned in.

Sloughi nature and character

The Sloughi is an extremely adaptable dog. He is considered to be affectionate and friendly. He has a reserved nature and prefers a quiet environment. The Sloughi builds a close relationship with its owner.

At the same time he is a proud and independent dog. In order to train a Sloughi, a high degree of patience as well as a loving contact with the four-legged friend is required.

If necessary, the Sloughi is also prepared to defend his owner. However, it does not tend to aggression. Towards strangers he usually shows the typical sighthound distant behaviour.

Activities with the Sloughi

Activities with the Sloughi

In North Africa, the Sloughi is still a popular hunting dog today, used mainly for sight hunting of gazelles and hares. In addition, these elegant animals, which have always enjoyed a high status in their homeland, are increasingly becoming valued companion dogs.

The Sloughi is also regularly seen at greyhound races, where he can show off his athleticism to the full. In our country the Sloughi is mainly kept as a family dog, where he can score points with dog lovers both with his elegant appearance and his loving nature.

Basically the Sloughi proves to be uncomplicated in keeping. However, it is important to always treat him lovingly and to ensure sufficient exercise. Simple walks are not enough for the Sloughi to get the hang of it.

It is therefore advisable to give the Sloughi the opportunity to satisfy its desire to run when playing dog sports. For this purpose, in addition to greyhound races on the track, coursing, for example, is a good way to do this.

However, for outdoor activities it is important to keep the Sloughi's strong hunting instinct in mind. A safe leashing in nature is therefore usually not possible without hesitation.

Sloughi diseases

The Sloughi is a robust and healthy dog breed, which has the reputation of not being excessively prone to certain diseases.

However, there is an inherited risk of progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). This is an eye disease characterized by progressive retinal degeneration.

Apart from this, the Sloughi, like other sighthounds, also tends to form tartar. In animals that are exposed to high physical strain during hunting and sports, joint problems may also occur.

The right nutrition of the Sloughi

In order to support the health of the robust and powerful Sloughi, a balanced diet that is optimally geared to the needs of the dog is essential.

The exact food requirements depend on various factors such as age, weight and level of physical activity and must therefore be calculated individually.

With our high quality cold pressed dry food without cereals, you are choosing a particularly digestible food for your Sloughi, which is ideal for reducing the generally somewhat higher probability of stomach twisting in large dogs.

However, if your Sloughi is regularly active in dog sports, we recommend feeding it with Bellfor Premium PUR Aktiv, which provides your dog with additional energy in the form of easily digestible carbohydrates from rice and corn.

In addition, it makes sense to supplement the daily diet of your Sloughi with the following products:
