The perfect sleeping place for your dog

Compared to humans, dogs need significantly more sleep and rest. Depending on the age of the four-legged friend, the need for rest and sleep can be as high as 20 hours a day.

A suitable sleeping place is therefore of great importance for dogs. At the same time, the huge supply of dog beds makes it difficult for dog owners to make the right choice. We'll explain what's important and what to look out for in your dog's place to sleep.

Take your time for the purchase

When looking for a dog bed for your four-legged friend, you will quickly notice that the selection can now easily compete with that of a normal furniture store.

For this reason you should take some time when choosing the future sleeping place for your dog and make sure that this fits the needs and the size of the animal.

The dog must like his place to sleep

Sleeping place for dog

Not every dog has the same preferences as far as his sleeping place is concerned. Some four-legged friends like to lie on the ground, while others prefer a particularly soft and comfortable underground.

When choosing the right sleeping place it is therefore important to know the dog's preferences and to take them into account when buying a dog. Your own taste should be in second place.

A good place to sleep offers the dog safety

Dogs want to feel safe in their sleeping place. For this reason it is advisable to choose a dog bed or a dog basket with raised sides. These offer the four-legged friend protection as well as the possibility of placing its head somewhat higher.

The right size of the sleeping place

The right size is one of the most important criteria you have to consider when choosing a sleeping place for your dog. The four-legged friend should be able to stretch out easily in his dog bed.

Before buying, measure the length of your dog from the tip of his nose to the end of his back. Add about ten centimetres to your measurement. This way you can be sure that the dog bed is not too small.

The right cover for the dog's sleeping area

Most dog breeds have hair. Especially during the change of coat the hair loss is very strong. For this reason it is advisable to prefer a sleeping place with a smooth upper.

This is easier to clean, which is also important with regard to hygiene and the spread of parasites such as fleas. Ideally, the cover of the dog bed should be removable and suitable for the washing machine.

The coat length influences the dog's preferences.

Coat length is another factor to consider when choosing a place to sleep for your dog. Short hair breeds usually like it particularly warm and cuddly, while long-haired animals often prefer a smooth material, because otherwise they quickly become too hot.

The right place for the dog's sleeping place

The place where your dog's sleeping place is located is at least as important as the right size and material.

Please note the following points to find a suitable location for your dog's place to sleep:

  • Do not place the dog bed next to a heater.
  • Avoid draughty areas as this can cause problems such as watery eyes.
  • The sleeping area should offer the dog a good all-round view.
  • Your four-legged friend should be able to withdraw without feeling excluded.
  • The garage or a corner in the corridor is not a suitable place for the dog bed.
  • Puppies need to be close to you, so it makes sense for puppies to sleep in your bedroom.
  • An outdoor sleeping area is only suitable for some breeds. But even with these breeds it should be moved indoors in winter at the latest.

Pay attention to the quality of your dog's sleeping place

A high-quality dog bed usually lasts longer and is also much more comfortable for your dog. A bed with a mattress inlay is therefore usually a good choice.

Such a bed is a bit more expensive, but proves to be robust and durable, so that you don't have to go looking for a bed for your dog again after only a few months.

The perfect place for dogs to sleep - the most important things at a glance

A dog bed in the right size to suit the preferences of the four-legged friend ensures that your dog feels comfortable in his sleeping place and finds sufficient rest and sleep.

For the health and well-being of your dog this is at least as important as a species-appropriate nutrition with high-quality dog food, which is exactly adapted to the needs of the four-legged friend.
