Do small dogs need a dry food with meat?

Dogs are so-called semi-carnivores. Their digestion is mainly specialised in the utilisation of animal proteins and fats. However, this does not mean that their food must necessarily contain meat.

Alternatively, insects are also very suitable as an animal protein source. Our Landgut-Schmaus Mini and Naturfarm-Schmaus Mini varieties therefore do not contain meat, but black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens). This is not only sustainable, but also healthy.

The insect protein has a very high biological value and a complex amino acid profile, so that a protein supply that meets the needs of the dog is no problem. At the same time, it has virtually no allergy potential, making it an excellent source of protein for allergic or generally nutritionally sensitive dogs.

Why should small dogs be fed grain-free dry dog food?

Dry dog food often contains large amounts of wheat. This is primarily for cost reasons. Grain is known to be much cheaper than meat. However, it is not necessary for species-appropriate feeding. In fact, grain as an ingredient in dog food can even prove to be downright problematic.
