Professor Moro’s Carrot Soup as a home remedy for dogs with diarrhoea?

Morosche Karottensuppe als Hausmittel für Hunde mit Durchfall?

If your dog has diarrhoea, this is not something you can just ignore. After all, it is not only very uncomfortable for the four-legged friend. It can also lead to dehydration and nutrient deficiencies.

Many owners therefore rely on home remedies such as Professor Moro’s carrot soup to relieve their dog's diarrhoea. In the following, we explain how the soup is prepared, whether it actually helps and which easily digestible solution against diarrhoea we recommend.

Who was Professor Moro?

Professor Moro's carrot soup was not originally intended to relieve diarrhoea in dogs. It was developed at the beginning of the 20th century by the Austrian paediatrician Dr. Ernst Moro.

During his work, he found that he could counteract diarrhoea in his little patients with the help of his carrot soup and thus noticeably reduce the death rate. It was quickly discovered that his carrot soup can help not only humans but also dogs with diarrhoea.

How is Moro’s carrot soup prepared?

The preparation of Moro's carrot soup, sometimes also called just Moro soup, is easy. It consists of just half a kilo of carrots, three grams of salt and water. The peeled carrots are boiled for at least 90 minutes. They are then drained, mashed and seasoned with three grams of salt. Finally, only boiling water is added to get a litre of ready-made soup from the carrot puree.

How does Moro’s carrot soup work?

At first nobody knew how and why the Moro soup helps against diarrhoea. Today it is assumed that their effectiveness can be explained by acidic oligogalacturonides. These are released from the pectin contained in the carrots due to the very long cooking time.

The acidic oligogalacturonides dock onto the pathogens in the dog's intestines, helping to render them harmless and eliminating the infection and associated diarrhoea.

What to consider when feeding Moro’s carrot soup

If you want to try Moro’s carrot soup on your four-legged friend, it is of course important that you let the soup cool down so that your dog will not scald itself when eating it.

That being said, you will of course need to adjust the portion size to the size of the animal. It goes without saying that it makes a big difference whether you have a small four-legged friend, such as a dachshund, or a mastiff. The latter requires significantly more of the soup to benefit from the desired effect.

Regardless of this, you should be aware that Moro’s carrot soup is only a home remedy. Of course, it cannot replace any medication that might be necessary or an appointment with your veterinarian. Keep in mind that diarrhoea can also indicate a serious dog disease. If the problem is not just a short-term problem, a visit to the veterinarian is therefore strongly recommended.
